(The Corner Office Journal) -- Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas (CAM) appointed Nishith Mehta as the head of financial regulatory & compliance to deepen the Indian law firm’s focus on financial sector and expand the client base.

Mehta, who will be based in Mumbai, has over 25 years of experience in the banking and capital markets space, CAM said in a statement. He has been a regulatory and compliance professional in various financial institutions, it added.

CAM said Mehta will be joining the firm from Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BofA), where he co-headed Asia Pacific Compliance & Operational Risk. He also served as the country head of compliance & operational risk and chief compliance officer for regulated businesses in India, it noted.

Mehta has managed diverse products and asset classes within global banking and markets as well as dealt with complex regulatory environments across major banking and securities regulators in Asia, CAM said.

Prior to joining BofA, Mehta has worked with Lehman Brothers, Kotak Mahindra Group (joint venture with Goldman Sachs), and Edelweiss Group.

“His extensive experience in the industry will be instrumental in strengthening our financial regulatory & compliance offerings,” CAM Managing Partner Cyril Shroff said.

Eyeing Financial Sector

With the addition of Mehta, CAM plans to focus deeply on addressing the regulatory & risk and compliance requirements of its financial sector clients. The appointment enables the firm to view the practice as a sector.

“CAM has been the market-maker in the financial services space, and with Nishith joining us we will expand our bench and client solutions,” said Anu Tiwari, partner and head of fintech & financial services regulatory at CAM.

The firm’s practice provides services, including securities regulation, banking advisory for investigations, compliance and risk management, policy advisory, fraud management and inspections.

CAM said this team will integrate into the firm's broader Financial Institution Group (FIG), which is a sector-focused practice, with over 10 partners, 50 fee earners, as well as 10 former regulators, advisors and senior bankers.

The FIG focuses on banks, specialty finance, asset managers, mutual funds, broker-dealers, intermediaries, insurance, fin-techs/paytechs, neo-banking, global technology platforms entering finance (tech-fins), International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) (GIFT City). The group advises on domestic and cross-border transactional, regulatory, policy and contentious aspects, including investigations, compliance, inspections, risk and fraud management.

“I look forward to contributing to the firm’s outstanding legacy by building on its strong foundations and working alongside its exceptional professionals to deliver trusted solutions to our clients,” Mehta said.
